Short version: an email address if you ask for reminders, a first name or nickname for the person whose birthday it is, and the day and month of that birthday. Not the year. Nothing else.
When you save a birthday, you're giving us information about somebody else. We take that seriously: we keep it to a nickname and a day and month, we never contact them, we never sell or share it, and we delete it the moment you ask. If you'd rather not hand over someone else's details at all, the guides work perfectly well without signing up for anything.
We rely on your consent, given when you sign up for reminders. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us — that deletes the reminder and everything attached to it.
For as long as you want reminders. If you unsubscribe, we delete the reminder data. If an account goes three years without being opened, we delete it and let you know first.
Our hosting and database provider, so the website and reminders can run. Our email provider, so we can send reminder emails. Our DNS and email-routing provider, so the domain and replies work. Basic analytics providers, in the ordinary course of running a website. Nobody else. We don't sell data and we don't run advertising.
Some outgoing links are affiliate links. When you click one, the retailer or its affiliate network, including networks such as Awin where relevant, may set a cookie so any purchase is credited to us. That happens on their side under their own privacy policy, and we don't receive your name, address or payment details — only an anonymous note that a sale occurred.
We use only the cookies needed to run the site and to count visits. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email us and we'll deal with it within one month. If you're unhappy with how we respond, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so by email before it takes effect.
